Rockingham County – Destination Trip Tips – Trail Town Guide

Trip Tip Host: Anna Wheeler and Keith Elliott with Dan River Basin Association (DRBA)
Outdoor Passion: Rivers
North Carolina Location: Rockingham County, NC

Most overlooked area to recreate?
The Dan, Smith, and Mayo Rivers that wind through the county are some of the most under-utilized gems in the area. With their peaceful waters, scenic views, and accessible entry points, these rivers offer a quiet retreat for kayaking, fishing, or simply enjoying nature—yet they often go unnoticed by many visitors.

What’s your favorite season to recreate in NC and why?
Spring and fall
are hands-down the best seasons to experience the beauty of North Carolina. The vibrant foliage in fall and the lush greenery in spring offer stunning backdrops for outdoor adventures, while wildlife is abundant and active. These seasons also tend to see fewer crowds, allowing for a more peaceful experience. However, be mindful of the weather, as temperatures can fluctuate—hypothermia is a risk in cooler months, so always check conditions before heading out.

What level of experience is needed to recreate in this area?
While some boating experience is recommended, most locations along the Dan River are beginner-friendly and offer a variety of opportunities for paddlers of all levels. Madison River Park features a ramped access to the river, making it easy to launch kayaks or canoes. Madison River Park Downtown will soon offer similar access, enhancing river entry points in the area. Most other access points are equipped with stairs or low-grade ramps to assist with navigating the steep riverbanks, making it easier for all visitors to enjoy the dynamic river, though full ADA accessibility may vary.

How long should you plan on visiting the area?
Plan for a full weekend to make the most of your time here! A 2- or 3-day trip gives you plenty of time to explore the Dan River, discover scenic trails, and enjoy everything this beautiful area has to offer.

What sets the area apart from other destinations?
As the Piedmont’s most water-rich county, with four rivers and three lakes, Rockingham County offers unmatched access to scenic waterways and aquatic adventures. But what truly sets us apart is our commitment to conservation and accessibility—local advocacy groups and stewardship initiatives ensure that these wild spaces remain protected, welcoming, and thriving for generations to come. The Dan River’s historical significance as a 19th-century trade route, with batteaux ports still listed on the National Register of Historic Places, adds a layer of cultural richness to every paddle or riverside hike. Whether you’re an expert paddler, a casual camper, or someone seeking a cozy cabin retreat, there’s a trail, river, or view here with your name on it—making Rockingham County the perfect blend of nature, history, and inclusive outdoor adventure.

What is unique about the facilities and infrastructure of the area?
Rockingham County stands out for its seamless blend of natural beauty and well-developed outdoor infrastructure. From the scenic Mayo River State Park to the winding Dan River, the area is packed with opportunities for recreation. With numerous public river access points, state parks, biking and hiking trails, picnic areas, and camping facilities, it’s easy to explore and enjoy the outdoors. The county also takes pride in its rich history, featuring sites like the Chinqua-Penn Trail, the Penn House, and the Wright Tavern—each offering guided tours, educational events, and ongoing preservation efforts.

How do you plan ahead and prepare for your recreational activity?
We always start by researching the paddle route to understand the distance, difficulty level, and any potential hazards—like low-head dams or tricky currents. We check river conditions, water levels, and the weather forecast to make sure it’s safe to head out. Packing the essentials is key: safety gear, an extra paddle, a helmet, snacks, water, and a first-aid kit. And most importantly, we share our trip plan—including our route and expected return time—with someone back home. A little prep goes a long way in making sure the adventure is safe and enjoyable!

What piece of outdoor equipment is your must-have?
A PFD (personal flotation device) with a safety whistle is at the top of our list! Whether we’re paddling the Dan River or exploring lakes and waterways, it’s essential for staying safe on the water. It’s simple, smart, and could make all the difference in an emergency—plus, it’s required in many places. Safety first, adventure always!

How do you put one Outdoor NC Leave no trace principle in action before/during/or after your activity?
We familiarize ourselves with Leave No Trace principles to minimize our impact on the environment. We plan to pack out all waste and minimize disturbance to wildlife and natural habitats.

Favorite place to visit before or after an outdoor adventure for a meal/coffee/or another beverage?
Before you hit the trails or river,
