Anne “Annie” Eliza Johns, a Civil War nurse, poet, teacher, and author of Cooleemee, A Tale of Southern Life, is buried in the Church of the Epiphany Cemetery in Leaksville. Born in 1831 in Virginia, she moved to Leaksville with her family in 1835 and attended Edgeworth Female Seminary. Confirmed in the Episcopal Church in 1851, Johns rose to prominence during the Civil War as assistant matron at a Confederate hospital in Danville, Virginia. She cared for both Confederate and Union soldiers with compassion, advocating for better conditions. Johns remained in Leaksville until her death on October 22, 1889.
