Alfred M. Scales, born in 1827 in Rockingham County, was a lawyer, Civil War general, U.S. Congressman, and North Carolina governor. He opened his law practice in Madison in 1855 and entered Congress in 1857. During the Civil War, he led the 13th NC Infantry, earning promotion to brigadier general after being wounded at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. Known for his bravery, he later fought in key campaigns before ending the war on medical furlough. Returning to law and politics, he served in Congress again and as governor (1884–1889). He died in 1892, and his restored law office now stands as a historic landmark.
