Speedwell Presbyterian Church
When visiting Troublesome Creek Iron Works (Speedwell Furnace), continue just down the road to Speedwell Presbyterian Church, long considered the oldest church organization in Rockingham County. The church’s close proximity to the ironworks has long linked it by tradition to the 1781 movements of Generals Nathanael Greene and Lord Cornwallis during the Southern Campaign. Greene is said to have camped near the ironworks following the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, and local tradition holds that he used the church as his headquarters during his encampments in the area.
The current sanctuary, built in 1844, replaced the original church structure, yet the grounds remain the site’s strongest connection to the Revolutionary era. The adjacent cemetery—one of the oldest in the county—contains graves dating to the eighteenth century. Tradition maintains that several British soldiers buried there were among those badly wounded at Guilford Courthouse and later brought to the ironworks area, where they died and were interred near the church.
