Haw River Sp Iron Ore
This trail feels like a hug from a forest! The Great Blue Heron Trail winds through wetlands, old farm fields, and mixed hardwood forests. The Iron Ore Pit Trail, within the Great Blue Heron Trail, passes by the historic Iron Ore deposits and remnants of an old iron ore mining pit. Starting from the trailhead, you must enter through the connector trail, then take the Great Blue Heron Trail Loop. There is an optional section within the loop to check out the Iron Ore Pit Trail. Note: This trailhead is a 10-minute drive away from the Haw River State Park Summit Access.

B ShumateA very nice blue heron loop trail. Trails are marked and well maintained. Iron ore trail is a short trail to the pit. Picnic tables are available and on the trail and bench seating to rest or just take in the view. Restrooms available the parking area. It is a great place for the whole family and dog friendly.

Beth BartonBeautiful park, easy hike. I went with a group and we passed quite a few others out walking their dogs or just enjoying the (really) brisk morning. We were near peak on leaf color and it was really pretty. Interesting things to see include the unusually heavy rocks that form a kind of rock garden along the trail, a fenced off pit that they think might represent a very old mining attempt, and the headwaters of the Haw River (which are a bit swampy but still pretty.

Rodney SmithSeems to be a good spot for a park. Trails looked nice. Adequate parking there's restrooms there for public use. It's been a lookout for the large male turkey that wouldn't let my dog and I out of my Jeep. He would not leave the side of the jeep and kept ruffling up his feathers letting him display his dominance and that he was the ruler of that park!!😂😂

AngelOverall a good experience but the trail is 3.2 miles and there's only 2 picnic tables or places to sit, one at the entrance to the walking trail and the other one is located 2 miles in. There should be more benches or places to sit throughout the whole trail for elderly people and younger kids. Also in a lot of places the trail is incredibly narrow with steep inclines on each side that could be disastrous if someone slipped in the tiniest way and fell down the incline. There were also places that needed to be cleared after recent storms so hopefully that will be done very soon and in low lying areas there was a lot of mud in the trail so you had to walk off trail to get around it. It was peaceful and really clean though which was so nice. I would definitely go back but only when it's not so hot outside cause in 85 degree weather today it was kinda miserable at times.
