Wright Tavern

Wright Tavern is a historic early 19th-century inn and tavern located in the county seat of Wentworth, just across from the historic courthouse. Construction of the tavern began around 1810 and was completed in 1816 by William Wright, a prominent local landowner; it remained in the Wright-Reid family for over a century before being sold to the Rockingham County Historical Society in 1967.

Architecturally, it is a rare and significant example of a two-story wooden “dog-run” tavern, a style characterized by an open central passage flanked by rooms, and is uniquely elaborate among surviving examples in North Carolina. The building also features Federal-style interior elements and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
