Splash Into Summer Safely: National Safe Boating Week in RoCo

There’s something special about this time of year in Rockingham County. The sun sticks around a little longer, the temperatures climb just enough, and suddenly our rivers are dotted with kayaks and river tubes, boats hit the water at Lake Reidsville, and weekends at Belews Lake are back in full swing.

 

River and lake season is here in RoCo—and National Safe Boating Week (May 16–22, 2026) is the perfect time to kick it off right.

This year, Visit Rockingham County is proud to partner with the Dan River Basin Association to help spread the word about safe, responsible fun on the water we all love.

Let’s be real—life jackets may not be the most “Instagram-worthy” accessory, but they are the most important one.

The national “Wear It” campaign reminds boaters that wearing a life jacket isn’t just for kids or weak swimmers—it’s for everyone.

Accidents can happen quickly, and a life jacket gives you the best chance to stay safe if they do.

Pro tip: Find one that fits well and feels comfortable. You’ll be much more likely to wear it all day—and forget you even have it on.

Whether you’re floating the Dan or Mayo Rivers, exploring the Smith or Haw, or enjoying a day on Lake Reidsville, Belews Lake, or Hunt Lake, there’s no shortage of ways to get outside in Rockingham County.
